Welcome to the Department of English

The Department of English at United International University was launched on the 12^th of December, 2023, and the English Language Institute (ELI) was merged with the Department of English on the mentioned date. Prior to the launching of the Department of English, the English Language Institute (ELI) began its journey along with the inception of United International University in 2003. The primary objective of ELI was to analyse English as a Second Language (ESL)/English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ language needs and facilitate them accordingly by designing and updating the courses. At present, the Department of English offers two major streams; one concentration is on Applied Linguistics and ELT, and the other one is on Literature. Along with core English Courses, the Department of English also offers two non-departmental fundamental courses, namely English I and English II, and both of the courses are compulsory for the new entrants of the School of Business and Economics and School of Science and Engineering and other departments.

The B.A. in English programme at UIU is designed to provide a broad spectrum of English studies, i.e. literary genres, critical theories, applied linguistics and theories of ELT, niche in research orientation, and hands-on teaching experience. The programme will mould students to pursue interdisciplinary courses that are expected to broaden their outlook and develop their liberal and humane values. Our B.A. programme encompasses a wide range of topics, from traditional subjects like Romanticism, Shakespeare, world literature, and composition techniques– to more modern subjects like advanced critical theories, ecocriticism, cultural studies, migration literature, and English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) in light of current developments in the teaching and learning of foreign languages. At the bachelor’s level, students can opt for a degree to specialize in either literature or ELT and applied linguistics, and there are substantial resources, cooperation and collaboration available to help them carry out their research work independently. As a result, our curricula are tailored to give students the tools they need to explore the world both inside and outside of the classroom and to be ready to face the challenges of the twenty-first century.  

The faculty members of the Department of English have noteworthy research publications. Hopefully, our passing-out graduates will teach at reputable universities both at home and abroad, as well as in the corporate sector, media, civil service, and many other fields. They will teach at colleges and high schools, work in humanities centres, and be employed by non-profit organizations, the private sector, and the public sector. Their research and teaching efforts will help to shape the corpus of current knowledge.
